Dennis played middle linebacker in Pat Narduzzi's four-man front, an undersized, downhill striker who diagnosed run keys fast and beat blockers to the gap before they could reach him. A three-year starter and the on-field brain of Pitt's defense, Dennis is an instinct-and-trigger linebacker whose evaluation is a fight between production and frame. He plays faster than he tests because he is almost never wrong on the first step, and he converts that head start into contact at the line of scrimmage. He is a run-game linebacker first and a pressure player second.
The production backs it up. He was third-team All-ACC in 2020 with 14.5 tackles for loss in just ten games, second-team in 2021 with 87 tackles and a 50-yard pick-six off a Clemson shovel pass, then first-team All-ACC and a Butkus semifinalist in 2022 with 94 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks. The flags were size and coverage. At 6-0 and 226 he can get engulfed by climbing guards, and he was a zone-match linebacker who struggled to carry backs and tight ends in true man.
The board treated him as a Day 3 starter-in-time: too productive and too smart to fall out of the draft, too small and too limited in man to go early. Tampa Bay eased him in behind Lavonte David and Devin White. His rookie year was almost entirely special teams: 13 games, 10 tackles, no defensive foothold on a team that won the NFC South. Year two started as the breakthrough, four games with 20 tackles and a sack as the rotation opened up, and then it ended in early October when a shoulder injury put him on injured reserve. Year three was the payoff. He started the 2025 opener at Atlanta, played 72 of 76 defensive snaps, and never gave the job back: 16 games, 16 starts, 96 tackles, 3.0 sacks, five passes defensed and his first NFL interception as the full-time signal caller in the middle.
The pick has aged into a bargain. A fifth-rounder who becomes a three-down starting linebacker by his third season is exactly the outcome teams draft for on Day 3, and the traits that got him there are the ones scouts liked: processing, trigger and blitz timing. The size questions never disappeared, and there are still snaps where a guard erases him or a back beats him on an option route.
