Speed arrived in the 2023 class as a sixth-year player with one year of real tape. He spent 2017 through 2021 at Georgia almost exclusively as a special teams contributor, then transferred to Michigan State for 2022 and started every week on the boundary. Evaluators had to grade one season of starting football attached to a rare physical shell.
That 2022 sample was loud in both directions. He piled up 62 tackles in 12 games, the highest volume of his career by a wide margin, and broke up five passes while playing in a Spartans secondary that was among the most attacked in the Big Ten. The signature reps were vertical: press, disrupt, run, contest. The flags were just as visible, with grabby hands downfield, tight-hipped transitions out of off coverage, and a habit of arriving a half-count late on breaking routes. Volume tackling for a corner is often a symptom, not a compliment.
The board treated him as a late Day 3 traits-and-teams pick, and that is exactly where he went. New England took him at #214 as a core special teamer with a developmental press-corner ceiling, betting that its staff could turn size, speed and five years of kick-coverage habits into a roster-sticking fourth or fifth corner.

New England waived Speed before his rookie season ever got going, and Indianapolis claimed him; he played eight games for the Colts in 2023 with five solo stops before returning to the Patriots for five more games that same year, a 13-game rookie season split between two teams and played almost entirely on kick and punt units. Chicago carried him in 2024 but he saw only two games. Houston signed him to the practice squad late in 2025 and he appeared in two games with a single tackle, and he has since landed in Dallas as a depth corner and special teams body. Three seasons in, he has yet to record a pass defensed or an interception in a regular-season NFL game.
In hindsight the pick was priced honestly and still did not hit the way New England hoped. A sixth-rounder who becomes a multi-year special teams survivor is not a wasted selection, but Speed never developed the coverage feel that would make the size and speed matter on defensive downs; the same late-reacting transitions that showed up on 2022 Michigan State tape have kept him off the field in four organizations. The lesson is the familiar Day 3 one: rare measurables buy you a locker, but a corner has to cover to keep it.
