BYU· 5'11"· 224 lb· 4.60s 40
Allgeier is a 225-pound one-cut runner who plays with pads down and legs churning. BYU handed him wide zone and duo, and he pressed the front side, planted once and got vertical without dancing. Contact balance is the trait: he absorbs the first hit off the hip, stays square and falls forward, and arm tackles simply do not bring him down.
He is not a home-run threat and does not make defenders miss in space, so the yardage comes in four- and five-yard chunks that wear a front out by the fourth quarter. He is a converted linebacker, and it shows in pass protection, where he steps up and meets blitzers instead of catching them. The signature is volume durability: 276 carries in his last college season without a drop in force.
Wide zone or duo-based run game that gives a single downhill read and asks the back to press, plant and finish through contact.
Year 1: early-down complement and goal-line back at 10-12 carries. Ceiling: 1,000-yard lead back in a run-first offense that pairs him with a receiving specialist.
A spread passing offense that keeps one back on the field and needs him to split out, run option routes and win matchups against linebackers in space.
His value rises with every extra early-down carry and falls the moment third down arrives.

Tyler Allgeier (BYU RB) vs Utah (2021)
Full-game cutup against a rivalry front, including protection and short-yardage reps.
Allgeier is one of the more unusual developmental stories in the class. He arrived at BYU as a walk-on running back, spent 2019 playing linebacker, moved back to offense in 2020 and immediately ran for 1,130 yards at 7.5 per carry. The body type — 5-foot-11, 224 pounds with a thick lower half — is the classic early-down frame, and the defensive year shows up in how willingly he strikes a blitzer.
The 2021 season was the résumé: 276 carries for 1,601 yards, 23 rushing touchdowns to co-lead the nation, second-team All-America honors and Independence Bowl MVP, all with 28 receptions as a checkdown option. The flags were about ceiling rather than floor. A 4.60 forty and 7.09 three-cone confirm he is a straight-line runner, the vision is adequate rather than special, and he was rarely asked to run routes beyond the flat. He also declared with two years of eligibility left, which meant no senior tape to answer those questions.
The board filed him as a Day 3 early-down complement — a back who would handle 10 to 12 carries and short yardage without ever being the featured player. Atlanta taking him 151st overall fit a run-first Arthur Smith offense that wanted a downhill body behind Cordarrelle Patterson. It was a scheme-specific pick, and the scheme was the right one.
- 01
Contact balance
absorbs the first hit without losing his base, stays square through arm tackles and consistently falls forward for extra yardage on inside runs.
- 02
One-cut decisiveness
presses the front side of zone runs, plants once and gets downhill immediately, which keeps his pads square and his blockers on track.
- 03
Short-yardage reliability
23 rushing touchdowns in 2021 co-led the nation and most came from inside the five, where his mass and pad level are decisive.
- 04
Pass protection willingness
a former linebacker who steps into blitzers and delivers the blow rather than absorbing it, a rare Day 3 trait at the position.
- 05
Volume durability
carried 276 times as a junior with no drop in force or ball security, showing he can absorb a full early-down workload.
- 01
Long speed
a 4.60 forty matches the tape: he is caught from behind in the open field and has no second gear to finish the long runs he breaks free on.
- 02
Elusiveness in space
does not make the first defender miss with lateral quickness, so nearly all of his production comes through contact rather than around it.
- 03
Receiving route tree
his college targets were almost entirely checkdowns and flat routes, leaving no evidence he can be trusted on third down.
- 04
Vision nuance
occasionally runs into the back of his blockers on gap schemes and misses the cutback lane, a byproduct of only two full seasons at the position.

Rushing and receiving verified season by season against Sports-Reference and ESPN season logs; all season sums match the published career totals. ESPN lists 1,606 rushing yards for 2021 against Sports-Reference's 1,601, and the Sports-Reference figure is used here because it reconciles with the career total. He also played linebacker in 2019 (26 tackles, 0.5 sacks), which is not reflected in this offensive line.
A dash means the figure is not published by a source we trust — never a zero we invented.
Heavy one-cut runner who wins through contact and shares a backfield rather than owning it.
Thick-framed downhill back whose contact balance and short-yardage scoring carry a top-tier workload.
Powerful early-down body without the speed or receiving role to hold a job for long.
Everything above is the pre-draft evaluation. This section is what actually happened — updated year over year.
The rookie year beat every projection. Allgeier took over when Cordarrelle Patterson got hurt and finished 2022 with 210 carries for 1,035 yards and three touchdowns, the first Falcons rookie back to clear a thousand yards since William Andrews in 1979, and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Atlanta then drafted Bijan Robinson eighth overall, and he settled into the complementary job the board had predicted: 683 yards in 2023, 644 at 4.7 per carry in 2024, and 514 yards with a career-high eight touchdowns in 2025 as the short-yardage closer. He signed a two-year, $12.25 million deal with Arizona in March 2026. Four seasons in: 67 games, 2,876 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns and zero fumbles.
The retrospective is that everything the evaluation flagged stayed true and none of it mattered. He never became a home-run threat or a third-down back, but a fifth-round pick who rushes for a thousand yards as a rookie, never puts the ball on the ground in four seasons and earns an eight-figure second contract is a clear win. The defensive year at BYU turned out to be the tell: the toughness and the protection work are why he stayed on the field once the carries went elsewhere.
