01Play style

White is a tall, upright three-down back who wins with tempo rather than raw burst. He builds behind the line, lets his blocks develop, then presses the crease and gets north in one decisive stride. The long legs give him a distinctive toolbox — jump cuts, spins, the occasional hurdle — and he keeps his balance through arm tackles.

The passing game is where the value compounds. He is a natural hands-catcher on screens, swings and option routes, with the body control to adjust away from his frame and the patience to set up a screen. He is a willing but unfinished pass protector, and he has no extra gear once he clears the second level, so the profile is volume and versatility rather than home runs.

02Scheme fit
Ideal system

A wide-zone rushing attack married to a passing game that treats the running back as a real receiver — screens, swings, angle routes and detached alignments, not just checkdowns.

Single-back zone runnerThird-down backSlot and wing alignmentsScreen-game backKickoff returner
Best role

Year 1: passing-down back and rotational early-down runner with 120-150 carries. Ceiling: a full-volume three-down starter whose receiving production carries the value even when the rushing average sits under 4.0.

Wrong fit

A downhill gap-and-power run game that asks its back to take the handoff and hit a predetermined hole immediately; his patience becomes hesitation and the lack of a second gear turns every crease into a four-yard gain.

He needs a structured offensive line. Behind a leaky front his tempo works against him because the read he is waiting on never appears.

His signature 2021 game against USC, the performance that turned him into a national day-two name.

04The evaluation

White is a three-down back built out of pace, size and receiving ability rather than explosion. He came to Arizona State from Mt. San Antonio College and started producing immediately, finishing top-10 in the Pac-12 in rushing in both seasons and turning into the Sun Devils' whole offense as a redshirt senior.

The 2021 tape is the case. He ran for 1,006 yards and 15 touchdowns on 182 carries in 11 games and added 43 catches for 456 yards, more than 1,400 scrimmage yards on 225 touches and second-team All-Pac-12. He tested the way the tape looked: 4.48 in the 40, a 38-inch vertical and a 10-foot-5 broad jump at 214 pounds. The flags are specific rather than vague. He can be too patient and gets caught running high, he rarely bounces a run that is there outside, and his pass-protection reps were limited enough that teams treated the technique as a projection.

The board had him as a day-two back with immediate passing-down value and a question about whether he could be the primary early-down runner. Tampa Bay took him at 91 to inherit Leonard Fournette's workload eventually, valuing the receiving floor as much as the rushing upside.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Receiving back

Natural hands, real route feel out of the backfield and the body control to adjust to off-target throws; the passing game was his safest projection.

  2. 02

    Run tempo

Elite patience setting up blocks, building behind the line and then hitting the crease decisively once the front commits.

  3. 03

    Contact balance

Long, strong lower half that shrugs off arm tackles from linebackers and defensive backs and keeps runs alive after first contact.

  4. 04

    Athletic testing

4.48 in the 40 with a 38-inch vertical and a 10-foot-5 broad at 214 pounds, the movement profile of a genuine three-down back.

  5. 05

    Production curve

Top-10 Pac-12 rusher in both Arizona State seasons and more than 1,400 scrimmage yards on 225 touches in his only full year as the feature back.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    No second gear

Lacks the breakaway speed to finish long runs; he clears the second level and gets caught, which caps the explosive-play rate.

  2. 02

    Over-patience

The same tempo that sets up blocks turns into hesitation on plays that require an immediate decision, and he runs high while waiting.

  3. 03

    Vision outside

Rarely takes the bounce lane when it is the better read, leaving yards on the ground by insisting on the interior track.

  4. 04

    Pass protection

Willing but technically unfinished, with limited college reps; his blitz pickup was a projection rather than an established skill.

Both Arizona State seasons are taken directly from cfbstats (team 28, player 1110586) and sum exactly to the career line: 224 carries for 1,426 yards and 20 touchdowns plus 51 receptions for 607 yards in 15 games. The 2020 season was the four-game Pac-12 COVID schedule White played. His first two college years were at Mt. San Antonio College, a junior college that cfbstats does not cover, so no JUCO seasons are listed rather than estimated. Fumble totals are not published for him at either season and are omitted.

Rachaad White has been a starting running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since his rookie season. He has shown versatility as a runner and receiver, leading the team in rushing in both his first two seasons.

Tampa Bay eased him in behind Leonard Fournette as a rookie in 2022, then handed him the job. He played all 17 games with 129 carries and 50 catches in 2022, then started all 17 in 2023 with 272 carries for 990 yards and 64 receptions for 549 yards — a 1,539-scrimmage-yard season that also exposed the 3.6 yards per carry underneath it. Tampa drafted Bucky Irving in 2024 and the split reversed: 144 carries at 4.3 and 51 catches for 393 yards in 16 games in 2024, then 132 carries at 4.3 in 2025 with eight starts. He signed with Washington in 2026 and opened the year in a rotation, with 68 career games, 48 starts, 2,678 rushing yards and 207 receptions.

The evaluation held up almost exactly. He became a legitimate NFL contributor and, for one season, a full-volume starter, and the receiving floor was every bit as real as advertised — 207 catches in four and a half years is starter-level pass-game production from the position. The rushing efficiency never arrived, which is precisely what the no-second-gear flag predicted, and it is why a sixth-round pick in Irving took his job. For pick 91, a durable four-year starter-caliber back with 4,100 scrimmage yards is solid value. Not a steal, not a miss.
