"Fifteen FBS games, a junior-college detour and the 243rd pick: a 99-yard pick six in his first start, two Super Bowl rings, and a three-year, $51 million contract four years later."Pre-draft read
A 6-2, 197-pound boundary corner with 32 1/4-inch arms who plays the position from the outside in. Watson is at his best in press-bail, using length to disrupt the release and then riding the vertical stem down the sideline, and his 4.49 forty with a 4.22 short shuttle says he can turn and run without losing the route.
He is a willing, physical tackler on the perimeter, which is the trait that kept him on the field at Washington State in run support. The questions were about volume and polish: he played only 15 FBS games after two years of junior college, his change of direction out of off coverage was still catching up to his frame, and his ball production came in bursts rather than as a habit.
A press-heavy zone defense in the Spagnuolo mold that lets a long corner jam at the line and pass off verticals rather than mirror in pure man.
Year 1: third corner and special teams contributor. Ceiling: a full-time boundary starter on a playoff defense.
A soft off-coverage scheme that parks him at nine yards and asks him to drive on quick outs, which is exactly where his pedal exit costs him.
Everything he does well starts with hands on a receiver inside five yards.

Jaylen Watson highlights, welcome to the Rams
The tape behind his three-year, $51 million deal in Los Angeles.
Watson grew up in Augusta, Georgia and attended Lucy Craft Laney High School and Curtis Baptist High School. He drew no meaningful FBS recruiting attention and began his college career at Ventura College in California, where as a sophomore he recorded 43 tackles, 13 pass breakups, four interceptions and a fumble recovery.
That junior-college season got him to Washington State, but the timing worked against him. He arrived for a 2020 season that COVID shortened to four games, and he played three of them as an immediate starter: 13 tackles, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, enough for honorable mention All-Pac-12 recognition on a sample almost no scout could evaluate.
His only full season came in 2021, when he started on the boundary for 12 games and produced 31 tackles, two interceptions, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries for 49 yards. Fifteen career FBS games is a thin body of work, and the projections reflected it: Bleacher Report had him as the 28th-best corner in the class, while NFL.com's Lance Zierlein expected him to go undrafted entirely. Kansas City took him with the 243rd pick as the third corner of its 2022 draft class, behind Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams.
- 01
Length on the boundary
6-2 with 32 1/4-inch arms and a 6-4 1/2 wingspan, the build teams want against outside X receivers.
- 02
Press-bail fluidity
a 4.22 short shuttle and 7.15 three-cone at his size say he can open his hips without a wasted step.
- 03
Physical in run support
he sets an edge on the perimeter and tackles through contact instead of waiting for help.
- 04
Ball skills in flashes
four interceptions at Ventura College and two more in his only full season at Washington State.
- 05
Upside on a thin sample
only 15 FBS games played, so everything he showed came with obvious development runway.
- 01
Tiny FBS resume
three games in the shortened 2020 season and 12 in 2021, with almost no tape against elite receivers.
- 02
Off-coverage transitions
he plays tall coming out of his pedal and gives ground on comeback and curl routes.
- 03
Age and path
a junior-college transfer who would be a 23-year-old rookie with two years of Power Five exposure.
- 04
Inconsistent ball production
three pass breakups in 2021 is light for a starting boundary corner in the Pac-12.
Relative Athletic Score (Kent Lee Platte) benchmarks combine/pro-day numbers against every measured prospect at the position since 1987. 10.00 is elite; 5.00 is average.

Both Washington State seasons are taken from cfbstats and cross-checked against The Football Database game logs, which agree on 23 solo and eight assisted tackles in 2021. StatMuse lists five career fumble recoveries; the game-by-game record supports three, so the lower verified figure is used.
A dash means the figure is not published by a source we trust — never a zero we invented.
Steady rotational-to-starting corner whose value is scheme versatility, not shutdown play.
Another long, undrafted-profile Chiefs corner who became a paid starter.
Late-round Chiefs corner who held a role for a while but never earned a second contract of size.
Everything above is the pre-draft evaluation. This section is what actually happened — updated year over year.
The 243rd pick turned into one of the best late-round returns of the class. Watson started the season opener as a rookie, was promoted after Trent McDuffie's Week 1 hamstring injury, and in his first career start on Thursday Night Football he picked off Justin Herbert in his own end zone and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. He finished 2022 with 16 games, six starts and six passes defensed, then started the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl LVII, intercepting both Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow in the playoff run.
He has been a fixture since. A second ring followed in Super Bowl LVIII, where he recovered a muffed punt. A broken fibula and tibia in October 2024 cost him 11 games, but he returned for the playoff run and started Super Bowl LIX. In 2025 he started all 15 games he played, setting career highs with 64 tackles and two interceptions before a groin injury ended his season in late December. On March 11, 2026 the Rams signed him to a three-year, $51 million contract. For a seventh-round pick: 182 career tackles, three interceptions, a pick-six, two Super Bowl rings and a top-market payday.
