"A three-year SEC backup who transferred down a level, led the FCS in forced fumbles, and then opened his NFL career with a sack in four straight games as a sixth-round afterthought."Pre-draft read

01Play style

A pure speed rusher in a linebacker's body. At 6-0 1/4 and 244 pounds with 34 1/4-inch arms, Houston is built to run the arc, and the pro-day numbers match the tape: a 4.74 forty with a 1.56 ten-yard split, a 4.48 shuttle, a 7.41 cone and a 39-inch vertical. He wins before contact, timing the snap and turning the corner flat.

The hand usage is better than the size suggests. He rips through the outside shoulder and attacks the ball once he clears, which is why the forced-fumble numbers follow him everywhere. Against the run he is a liability when tight ends get into his frame, and he has no answer for a tackle who lands the first punch. He is a designated rusher, not an every-down edge.

02Scheme fit
Ideal system

An attacking four-man front that uses him as a sub-package speed rusher from a wide alignment and keeps him off early-down run duty.

Wide-9 rusherStand-up edgeNASCAR packageThird-down specialist
Best role

Year 1: designated pass rusher and core special teams. Ceiling: a 400-snap situational edge worth eight to ten sacks a season.

Wrong fit

A 3-4 that asks its outside linebackers to set a hard edge and take on pulling guards, where his weight gets him washed out.

Every good season of his career has come from a defense that let him rush and nothing else.

04The evaluation

Houston redshirted at Florida in 2017 after a suspension tied to a credit card fraud scheme involving nine players. As a redshirt freshman in 2018 he appeared in all 13 games as a reserve linebacker and special teams piece with 28 tackles, two tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a blocked punt against Charleston Southern.

The next two years were steady without being loud. He played all 13 games again in 2019 with 38 tackles, six tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble against South Carolina, ranking fourth on the team in sacks. In 2020 he appeared in nine games with 37 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble against Oklahoma, then entered the transfer portal with three seasons of rotational work and no starting job.

Jackson State changed everything. In one season under Deion Sanders he played 13 games and recorded 70 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and two defensive touchdowns, finishing second in the FCS in both sacks and tackles for loss and first in forced fumbles. He was first-team All-SWAC, SWAC Newcomer of the Year and an FCS All-American. Teams still saw an SEC backup who dominated a level down at 23 years old.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Explosive first step

a 1.56-second ten-yard split and a 39-inch vertical, the burst markers a designated edge rusher is drafted for.

  2. 02

    Elite senior production

16.5 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss at Jackson State, second in the FCS in both categories in 2021.

  3. 03

    Strips the ball

seven forced fumbles in one season, first in the FCS, from a rusher who finishes at the quarterback's arm.

  4. 04

    Length for his height

34 1/4-inch arms and a 6-10 wingspan that let him keep tackles off his chest on the edge.

  5. 05

    Bend and change of direction

a 4.48 shuttle and 7.41 cone that show up when he flattens the corner to the pocket.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    Undersized for the edge

244 pounds with no anchor, so tight ends and pulling guards move him out of running lanes.

  2. 02

    Level of competition

his only dominant season came in the FCS after three quiet years as an SEC rotational player.

  3. 03

    Old for a prospect

he turned 24 during his second NFL season, which limits how much developmental projection a team can reasonably buy.

  4. 04

    Off-field flag

the freshman suspension for a credit card fraud scheme at Florida required real answers in interviews.

Florida season lines come from his official Jackson State bio, which reproduces the Gators' year-by-year splits, and the 2020 line matches cfbstats exactly at nine games, 37 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack. The 2021 line is verified against Jackson State's official cumulative statistics, which list 13 games, 70 tackles and 24.5 tackles for loss. His 2018 bio entry enumerates tackles, tackles for loss and forced fumbles with no sacks credited, so that season is recorded as a verified zero; pass breakups, interceptions and fumble recoveries are omitted where no source lists them rather than filled with zeros. Season totals sum to the career line shown.

A dash means the figure is not published by a source we trust — never a zero we invented.

Detroit took him 217th, waived him on August 30, 2022 and re-signed him to the practice squad the next day. The Lions promoted him to the active roster on November 28 and he answered on Thanksgiving with two sacks, two solo tackles and a fumble recovery against Buffalo on five defensive snaps. He added a sack in each of his next three games, becoming only the third player in NFL history, with Terrell Suggs and Santana Dotson, to open a career with a four-game sack streak. Seven games as a rookie produced eight sacks and seven tackles for loss.

The follow-up never came in Detroit. A leg injury in Week 2 of 2023 sent him to injured reserve on September 19, and after being reinstated on January 18, 2024 he played eight games before the Lions released him on November 26. Cleveland claimed him the next day for three appearances. Dallas signed him on July 22, 2025 and he played all 17 games with 35 tackles, 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble, then won the Black College Football Pro Player of the Year award in 2026. Fourteen and a half career sacks from the 217th pick is a clear win, even if the rookie explosion was never repeated.
