"Onwenu is proof that the last thing the draft learns about a 350-pound guard is whether the weight is a problem or the entire point."Pre-draft read

01Play style

Onwenu is a mountain of a guard who wins by simply occupying and erasing whatever lines up across from him. At 6-foot-3 and 350 pounds he has rare mass with a low center of gravity, and he redirects rushers with strong hands rather than footwork. In pass protection he does not get bull rushed — there is no leverage angle that moves him once his hands are fitted.

The second trait is a mean streak on down blocks: he finishes, and he buries defenders in a phone booth. What he does not do is cover ground. Quickness is average at best, he can overextend when reaching, and climbing to the second level is work. Run him and pass him in tight spaces and he is dominant; ask him to move in space and the profile narrows fast.

02Scheme fit
Ideal system

Gap-and-power run scheme built on down blocks and duo concepts, with a drop-back passing game that keeps its guards in tight quarters

Right guardLeft guardRight tackle
Best role

Year 1 interior backup with swing value at both guard spots; ceiling is a long-term starting right guard who anchors the strong side of a power run game.

Wrong fit

An outside-zone stretch offense that asks its guards to reach three-techniques, pull wide and climb to second-level defenders in space on every snap.

04The evaluation

Onwenu was a four-year Michigan contributor who spent his last two seasons as one of the more physically overwhelming guards in the Big Ten. He arrived from Detroit Cass Tech as a U.S. Army All-American, played in 46 games across four seasons, and started 35 of them, all at right guard for the final two years. He earned All-Big Ten third-team honors from the coaches in both 2018 and 2019 and made Pro Football Focus College's second-team All-Big Ten as a senior.

The evaluation came down to mass versus mobility. His size and strength were genuinely elite — he overwhelmed interior defenders in tight quarters, redirected rushers with one hand and never got walked backward. But he peaked near 380 pounds in college and still played at 350, and the athletic testing and tape showed slow feet, sloppy footwork when asked to move, and trouble passing off twists and stunts.

Boards read him as a power-scheme-only guard with a weight-management flag, which is how a two-time All-Big Ten starter from a blue-blood program falls to the sixth round. New England, always comfortable betting on big bodies with football intelligence, took him at 182 as a developmental interior piece.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Rare mass with leverage

350 pounds on a 6-foot-3 frame gives him a base no interior rusher can move, and he simply cannot be bull rushed.

  2. 02

    Hand strength

he redirects and resets rushers with a single strike, controlling reps without needing to win with quickness or angle.

  3. 03

    Finishing temperament

a genuine mean streak on down blocks and combination blocks, burying defenders once he gets his hands inside.

  4. 04

    Experience and durability

46 career games with 35 starts, including every game at right guard as a junior and senior in the Big Ten.

  5. 05

    Positional value in tight spaces

dominant in short-area power blocking, exactly the trait a gap-and-power run game pays for at guard.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    Quickness

average lateral burst for the position, which shows up against interior twists and stunts that ask him to redirect on the move.

  2. 02

    Movement in space

climbing to the second level and reaching on outside zone are the least natural parts of his game and limit scheme fit.

  3. 03

    Overextension

he reaches and lunges when a defender works away from his frame, and a lost fit is hard to recover at his weight.

  4. 04

    Weight management

he peaked near 380 pounds in college and the body composition was a standing flag for every team evaluating him.

Career—46

Sports-Reference lists 8/12/13/13 games including bowls for a 46-game career, matching Michigan official count of 46 appearances with 35 starts. Michigan confirms he started all 13 games at right guard in both 2018 and 2019; the remaining nine starts are not broken out by season in the official bio, so 2016 and 2017 starts are left blank rather than estimated. Offensive linemen carry no statistical production.

This is one of the best value picks of the draft. Onwenu started all 16 games as a rookie in 2020, moving between right guard and right tackle, and was the highest-graded rookie in the league by Pro Football Focus. He has been a full-time New England starter ever since: 16 games with eight starts in 2021, all 17 in 2022, 15 in 2023, 17 in 2024 and all 17 in 2025 plus four postseason starts. In March 2024 the Patriots re-signed him as an unrestricted free agent to a three-year, $57 million deal with $38 million guaranteed and a $22.5 million signing bonus. Through his career he has 99 games with 91 starts split across right guard, left guard, right tackle and even a handful as a tackle-eligible tight end.

In hindsight, the flags were real and did not matter. The quickness limits still exist — he was never going to be a wide-zone guard — but New England built a power-based run game that let his mass be the whole point, and the versatility to slide out to tackle turned out to be a bonus nobody had graded. Twenty-nine teams passed on a two-time All-Big Ten starter from Michigan because of a weight number. He became a $57 million cornerstone. That is what a sixth-round hit looks like at its absolute ceiling.
