"A five-star press corner whose two healthy LSU seasons produced 23 breakups and all-conference honors, with a tampered drug test in 2017 and uneven late-season tape keeping a first-round skill set at the top of the second."Pre-draft read

01Play style

Fulton is a boundary press-corner who wants his hands on a receiver inside the first five yards and builds everything off that first contact. He sets up square at the line, jams with a compact punch rather than a lunge, and uses a quick hip flip to recover when the release beats his placement.

In off-coverage he reads the quarterback's eyes and drives with real closing burst, though he can be a beat late out of his pedal against sudden breaks. Against the run he is willing but tackles as a grabber more than a striker. The separator is grabby physicality through the route paired with the balance to turn and locate the ball late.

02Scheme fit
Ideal system

Press-man defense that lets him start with hands at the line, with enough Cover-3 and quarters in the plan that he can play with eyes on the quarterback.

Boundary CBPress-man CBCover-3 flat
Best role

Year 1 outside starter opposite an established CB1, with a ceiling as a legitimate CB1 on the boundary if the health holds.

Wrong fit

A heavy off-zone shell that removes contact at the line and asks him to drive forward from depth on every snap, which exposes the delayed transition and the tackling.

Needs a staff comfortable with contact downfield; his play style draws holding and illegal-contact flags in a tightly officiated scheme.

04The evaluation

A New Orleans five-star who arrived as one of the country's most decorated defensive back recruits, Fulton left LSU a two-year starter in the SEC's most demanding secondary. He played corner the way it is taught in Baton Rouge: press at the line, travel with the assignment, expect an island. He was an all-conference piece of a national championship defense and a top-45 name on most boards.

The production was respectable rather than loud: 24 tackles, nine breakups and an interception in ten starts in 2018 before an ankle injury ended his year early, then 38 tackles, a team-high 14 breakups and another pick across all 15 games of the 2019 title run. The bigger story was the missing season. Fulton was suspended by the NCAA after tampering with a drug-test sample in early 2017, sat all year, and had the second year of the ban overturned before 2018. Teams also had tape, Texas early and Clemson in the title game, where he was targeted and beaten.

The board settled on a late-first to early-second corner: enough cover ability to start outside, enough questions about consistency and the off-field file to keep him out of the top twenty. Taking him at the top of the second was a bet on the traits and the pedigree becoming the baseline.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Press technique

Comfortable with his hands in the receiver's chest at the line, using placement and timing rather than a wild punch to disrupt the release and reset the route's timing.

  2. 02

    Hip fluidity

Flips and opens without wasted motion, which lets him recover when a receiver wins the first move and stay attached through the vertical stem.

  3. 03

    Ball location

Gets his head around late and tracks the throw in the air, playing through the catch point instead of guessing and grabbing at the receiver's back.

  4. 04

    Route awareness

Understands route concepts and leverage in both man and zone, reading stems and passing off crossers without panicking when help is late.

  5. 05

    Competitive edge

Plays with an edge through the route and does not fold after a completion, an SEC-tested temperament that showed up in the biggest games of the title run.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    Transition delay

Can be a half-step late out of his pedal against sharp breaking routes, which turns contested throws into completions underneath.

  2. 02

    Size mismatches

Loses more than his share of 50-50 balls against bigger receivers, where his frame and length do not let him play over the top of the catch point.

  3. 03

    Tackling form

Tackles as a grabber and dragger rather than a striker, leading to missed opportunities and extra yards on perimeter runs and screens.

  4. 04

    Off-field file

The 2017 suspension for tampering with a drug test kept him off the board entirely for some teams and lowered him on others regardless of the tape.

Tennessee got the player the tape suggested, just not enough of him. Fulton's rookie year was broken up by a COVID list stint and injured reserve, limiting him to six games and two starts. Healthy in 2021, he became the Titans' primary boundary corner and posted the best year of his career: 13 starts, 14 passes defensed and two interceptions on a division winner. The next two seasons followed the same template, quality play when available across 11 games in each of 2022 and 2023, with another trip to injured reserve that December. Tennessee let him reach free agency, and he signed with the Chargers for 2024, starting 14 of 15 games. Kansas City signed him in 2025, where a limited eight-game, two-start season followed.

In hindsight the pick is a shrug rather than a regret. Fulton has been a real NFL starting cornerback across six seasons and 53 starts, close to par for the top of the second round, but the durability never allowed the leap the traits promised, and he has yet to play a full 17-game season. Several corners drafted after him have outproduced him, so this was not the best available call. The suspension everyone spent draft weekend debating has never been the issue. The ankle, the soft-tissue injuries and the availability were.
