"A forty-two-game starter with 4.52 speed and a school-record twenty-eight-tackle game, whose downhill trigger always seemed to arrive a beat before his reads did."Pre-draft read

01Play style

Downhill inside linebacker who played every snap at full throttle. He triggered the instant he read run, closing downhill through the A gap with real collision force, and he had the straight-line speed to chase plays down from the backside to the sideline. Oklahoma used him as the green-dot signal caller behind a front that asked him to run and hit.

The trade-off was processing. He guessed early, over-ran fits when the first key was false and took inconsistent angles into traffic. In coverage he could carry a back and run the seam but read route concepts a beat late. The signature was volume through pure motor: 155 tackles as a sophomore, including a school-record 28 in one game against Army.

02Scheme fit
Ideal system

Two-gap front with big bodies that keeps linebackers clean, letting him run downhill and chase rather than defeat blocks in the box.

Best role

Year 1: three-down Mike behind a stout front with a veteran making the checks. Ceiling: high-volume tackling starter and defensive communicator.

Wrong fit

Light, penetrating front that leaves guards free to climb, where his inability to shed and his early triggers get exposed on every run play.

He needs a nose tackle who eats double teams more than he needs coaching.

04The evaluation

Murray came out as the most physically gifted off-ball linebacker in a class that did not value the position highly. He started all 42 games of his Oklahoma career, an unusual durability and availability profile, and finished with 335 tackles and 38 tackles for loss.

The production was enormous and the context was complicated. He put up 155 tackles in 2018 on a defense that was among the worst in the Big 12, then followed with 102 tackles and 17 tackles for loss as a junior, earning second-team AFCA All-America and first-team All-Big 12 honors. The tape showed a 6-2, 234-pound linebacker with 4.52 speed who arrived violently and covered ground no one else on the field could, and who also ran himself out of plays by triggering before he had confirmed the key. Against play-action and zone-read he was a step behind, and shedding blocks in tight spaces was a real weakness.

Most boards had him as a late-first or early-second grade with the athleticism of a top-15 player and the instincts of a Day 2 one. Los Angeles traded up to take him 23rd overall, paying premium capital for a linebacker whose best football depended entirely on being kept clean.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Sideline speed

Runs 4.52 at 234 pounds and chases plays down from the backside, covering ground that most off-ball linebackers simply cannot reach.

  2. 02

    Downhill force

Triggers through the A gap and arrives with collision, finishing tackles at the line rather than riding ball carriers to the ground.

  3. 03

    Availability

Started all 42 games of his college career, a three-year run of durability and every-snap responsibility at a position that grinds players down.

  4. 04

    Signal-calling

Wore the green dot for Oklahoma and ran the front's checks, showing the communication load is not a concern at the next level.

  5. 05

    Volume production

Recorded 335 career tackles and a school-record 28 stops in a single game against Army as a sophomore.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    Diagnosis

Triggers before confirming the key, so play-action, misdirection and zone-read concepts pull him out of his gap consistently.

  2. 02

    Block shedding

Gets stuck on climbing guards in tight space and lacks the hand technique to disengage once a lineman reaches his frame.

  3. 03

    Coverage reads

Carries backs and seams athletically but processes route concepts late, opening throwing windows behind him in zone.

  4. 04

    Angles in traffic

Takes inconsistent pursuit paths when the play is inside, converting his speed advantage into wasted motion and missed fits.

Murray started all 16 games as a rookie and produced 107 tackles, then lost his job and most of 2021, playing 11 games with six starts and 31 tackles as the Chargers changed coordinators. He rebuilt his standing with 16 starts in 2022 and a career-quality 2023 of 107 tackles and three sacks in 15 games, but Los Angeles let him leave and the fifth-year option never became a long-term commitment. Tennessee signed him to a two-year, $15.5 million deal in 2024 and got 95 tackles in 14 games before trading him to Dallas, where he started at middle linebacker in 2025 and finished with 81 tackles. He entered 2026 as a free agent and signed with his hometown Texans practice squad on September 15, 2026 after Houston lost Henry To'oTo'o to injured reserve. Through six seasons he has 90 games, 83 starts, 497 tackles and 9.5 sacks.

The verdict is that the player was exactly what the file described and the price was wrong. Murray became a durable, productive starting linebacker who fills the stat sheet and gets moved every couple of years because the processing never caught up to the speed; teams keep finding a cleaner version of that skill set on Day 2. Trading up into the twenties for an off-ball linebacker with diagnosis questions was the error. Six years and four organizations later, the tackle totals are real and so is the reason nobody has paid him to stay.
