"The fastest man in the 2020 draft and the one who changed the geometry of a defense before the snap — Henry Ruggs III was a 4.27 weapon whose college usage never came close to his ceiling."Pre-draft read

01Play style

Ruggs is pure vertical speed, the rare receiver whose presence forces a safety to cheat before the ball is snapped. He accelerates into top gear within three steps, tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and averaged 17.5 yards per catch across three Alabama seasons. Nothing in the secondary runs with him down the sideline.

He is more than a straight line: comfortable on jet sweeps and shallow crossers, dangerous in the open field, and a willing perimeter blocker Alabama trusted in heavy sets. The route tree is narrow, though. He has not been asked to win at the stem against press or to work the intermediate middle, and at 190 pounds contested catches against physical corners are a real question.

Best role

Year 1 field-stretching starter running verticals and crossers; ceiling is a No. 1 receiver who bends every coverage in the league

Wrong fit

A possession offense that lines him up alone on the boundary against press and asks him to win 12-yard comebacks

His value is measured in the space he creates for teammates, not only in his own reception totals

04The evaluation

Ruggs is the class's most explosive receiver, a legitimate 4.27 runner whose speed is a schematic weapon rather than a highlight-reel novelty. The football identity is field-stretching: he takes the top off coverage, converts anything behind the secondary into points, and creates room underneath for everyone else on the roster. Alabama's offense scored because defenses had to account for him on every snap.

The production is modest for a top-fifteen pick because of the room he shared. Across 41 games he caught 98 passes for 1,716 yards and 24 touchdowns, playing alongside Jerry Jeudy and DeVonta Smith. He totaled 12 catches as a freshman, then 46 for 741 and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore, and 40 for 746 with seven scores in 12 games as a junior. The touchdown rate is the tell: nearly a quarter of his career catches ended in the end zone.

The risk is volume and frame. He has never been a 60-catch college receiver, he weighs 190 pounds, and his production depends heavily on scheme creating clean releases. Teams looking for a complete No. 1 receiver ranked Jeudy and CeeDee Lamb above him; teams looking for an offense-altering element had him first. Las Vegas, building around a play-action passing game, took him twelfth — the first receiver off the board.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Elite top speed

Ran 4.27 in Indianapolis, the fastest time of the class, and the deep tape confirms no corner runs with him.

  2. 02

    Instant acceleration

Reaches full stride within three steps off the line, which turns short throws into explosive gains.

  3. 03

    Big-play scoring rate

Twenty-four touchdowns on 98 career catches at Alabama, with a 17.5-yard career average per reception.

  4. 04

    Deep-ball tracking

Locates and adjusts to the football over either shoulder without losing stride down the sideline.

  5. 05

    Willing perimeter blocker

Competes in the run game and on screens, which keeps him on the field in Alabama's heavy personnel.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    Narrow route tree

Alabama used him on verticals, slants, crossers and screens, leaving intermediate route craft unproven at the next level.

  2. 02

    Slight frame

At 190 pounds he loses contested catches to physical corners and is easily rerouted by press coverage at the line.

  3. 03

    Low volume production

Never topped 46 catches in a season and shared targets with two other first-round receivers in Tuscaloosa.

  4. 04

    Release work against press

Relies on speed rather than technique to beat jams, which NFL corners will test on every snap.

Ruggs started 12 of 13 games as a rookie, catching 26 passes for 452 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 17.4 per reception. His second season was better on a per-play basis: 24 catches for 469 yards and two scores in seven games, 19.5 yards per catch, with the vertical threat finally showing up in the offense. Then, on November 2, 2021, he drove a Corvette at speeds up to 156 mph with a blood alcohol level of 0.161 into the back of an SUV, killing 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her dog. The Raiders released him hours later. He pleaded guilty in May 2023 to felony DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to three to ten years in prison.

His NFL career is 20 games, 50 catches, 921 yards and four touchdowns, and it will not resume. Nevada's parole board denied his request in June 2026, and in September 2026 he was moved to a minimum-custody transitional housing facility in Reno ahead of a mandatory parole release date of August 24, 2027. The football evaluation is beside the point here. The speed was real and the usage was starting to work; a woman is dead, and the pick is a footnote to a criminal case. Las Vegas passed on Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb and Tristan Wirfs to make it.
