Week 5: Smith Commands the Offense, Notre Dame Offers More Than One Answer

Games of October 3, 2026: volume meets explosiveness at Iowa, while Notre Dame supplies a broader offensive model and a defensive evaluation lesson.

October 3: distinguish responsibility from reputation

This Week 5 edition covers games played October 3, 2026, not the later publication date. Ohio State beat Iowa 31–14, while Notre Dame defeated North Carolina 37–26. The useful connection is not simply that both winners generated productive quarterback lines. It is how each offense distributed responsibility, and what that distribution allows an evaluator to say about individual roles.

Jeremiah Smith supplied the clearest example of concentrated receiving responsibility. Notre Dame, meanwhile, paired a leading receiver with substantial rushing production. Those are different offensive environments. Treating every productive receiver as the same kind of prospect, or every winning quarterback as equally responsible for the result, would erase the most informative part of the afternoon.
